The 16th "Chinese Bridge" World College Students Chinese Competition Kenya Division held by the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi

On the 5th of May 2017, the 16th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students Kenya division was held successfully at Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi the theme of the competition was "Dreams Enlighten the Future".

 There were 16 contestants from four Confucius Institutes and one Chinese-teaching institute participating in the event to qualify to represent Kenya in the Final competitions to be held in china.

Prof. Njeru, Principal College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Nairobi, welcomed the guests and the judges in his speech. He pointed out that this competition has great significance and encourages student to study Chinese harder. Prof. Henry Mutoro, DVC Academic Affairs who was representing the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi said that he was very much looking forward to the wonderful performance of young students; he encouraged the competitors to make the greatest efforts to and do their best in the competitions. He also appreciated the efforts made by the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi in hosting the “Chinese Bridge competitions and promotions of the Chinese culture in Kenya, and facilitating the friendship of Sino-African. He wished all the contestants the best.

The competition was hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi, sponsored by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Kenya and the Confucius Institute Headquarters Hanban. 

The preliminary round was divided into three parts. Part one: making a speech on My Chinese Story, in which contestants shared their stories associated with Chinese language. Part two: talent show, i.e. Part three: Q&A on Chinese culture and China-Kenya friendship, in which contestants answered questions including the Kenya’s Vision 2030 project on the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway, and the on holding “R&B” International Cooperation Summit Forum to be held on 14 May 2017, in Beijing.

After four hours fierce competition, Miss Hilda Akoth Juma (Chinese name; Zhang Meiling) a first year student, from the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi was finally crowned the best performer both in talent and also the best overall performer. She was given the first price which also meant that she was the Kenyan Flag bearer to represent the country in the final competitions in China. The rest of 3 contestants from the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi ranked at the second and third places. In addition, various clubs from the University of Nairobi Confucius Institute presented brilliant performances.

When asked to make a comment after the competitions the Winner Zhang Meiling had this to say “I will put more effort in learning and perfecting my Chinese language and am sure that Chinese language will enlighten my future as the theme states.” She also said that Confucius institute has opened a golden opportunity for her to learn the language and that now one of  her dreams has come true since she is representing Kenya in the final competitions in China and get a chance to be more in touch with Chinese culture.

The Counselor of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Kenya who was also the chairman of the panel of judges in the preliminary competition, Mr. Yao Ming congratulated the winners after the completion, and had a speech to say “the effort is the key factor to success, as the hope of country’s future, young students shall contribute on cooperation and communications” he encouraged the contestants to carry forward China-Kenya friendship and the representative to have wonderful achievement in final round in china.

As the first Confucius Institute in Africa and the successive organizer of “Chinese Bridge” event in Kenya, the University of Nairobi Confucius Institute has contributed to broadcasting the Chinese culture, cultivating talent and facilitating the China-Kenya relationship.
