Confucius Institute of University Nairobi organized the “2016 Summer Camp” which the Hanban sponsored the trip of students from Kenya to Tianjin Normal University, the Summer Camp commenced on 5th July 2016 and lasted for two weeks.

In order for the students to appreciate Chinese language and Culture, Tianjin Normal University organized various activities including the paper cutting tutorials, calligraphy tutorials, and HSK Revision activities.

There was also a visit to the ancient cultural street during the first week which was among the greatest experience that as students we were exposed to. The students saw and learnt about the Chinese traditional outfits (qípáo), antique carvings and the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals. The students sat for HSK Level 1 and 3 examinations and were later awarded certificates by Tianjin Normal University at the end of the closing ceremony.

The Students also toured in Beijing. The sites visited include the Temple of Heavens, Tian’an men Square and the Forbidden City. There was also a hike of the Great Wall, Badaling section which marked the peak moments of the summer camp trip experience. The Great Wall is one of the 7 wonders of the world. Most students managed to climb as high as 888 meters. While in Beijing, the students also visited restaurants serving Beijing delicacies such as the famous Beijing roast duck (kǎoyā) and hotpot (huǒguō) meals. Though unusual and a totally new experience, these delicacies were warmly embraced by students. The final day was marked by a visit to the Confucius Institute headquarters (Hanban). At the China Exploratorium, students saw the Statute of the legendary Confucius and a brief history about him, the history and development of Chinese characters, Kungfu masters’ portraits, Chinese musical instruments, Chinese Opera dress code, development of cities throughout the years and Chinese Zodiac animals. We also sampled various art gallery exhibitions- indeed Chinese have a rich culture!

Later in the day, the students departed from Beijing on their way back to Kenya arriving on Friday the 15th July 2016 in the morning. What a great experience!
