On November 12th 2016, Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi (CIUON) held Local Chinese Teacher Academic Conference with the theme of Chinese Language Teaching and Research.
The guests of this conference are DVC Prof. Henry Mutoro, director Confucius Institute Prof. Guo Hong, Dr. Lucy Ogol form KICD, Prof. Kithaka Wa Mberia and Prof. Okoth Okombo, and the participants were members of the Local Chinese Teachers Club, trainees from Tianjin Normal University and volunteer teachers from the CIUON. Prof. Guo Hong gave the welcoming remarks; she pointed the aim of the conference which was to improve the teaching and research ability of the Chinese local teachers. She hopes that members from the Local Chinese Teachers Club can share experience to improve their own teaching. Prof. Henry Mutoro and Dr. Lucy Ogol also gave their remarks.
Then the trainees from Tianjin Normal University started training the teachers. The local teachers made some comments about their teaching and they think that it is necessary to make the curriculum local and more systematic. Then Prof. Okoth Okombo gave lecture about Chinese Language Teaching and Research. He pointed out that teachers are in a better position than researcher when they are doing research because they are the ones who teach, so they can find out the problems and issues more easily. So every teacher should do research. The meeting ended with the video of volunteer teacher’s teaching.
This conference was successful, we hope that local Chinese teachers can learn from it and try to do some research to make Chinese teaching in Kenya more professional.
