On May 29th, local time in Kenya, the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi successfully held the HSK Online Exam for the first time.
Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the primary school, middle school and the universities in Kenya were suspended. The Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi has been offering online teaching for students. In order to meet the needs of students who are studying at home and needed proficiency test for scholarship application to China, the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi applied to the Confucius Institute Headquarters in order to have HSK Online Exam.
Chinese Testing International develops and uses the HSK network test system, which provides a great deal of convenience to international Chinese language learners to take the HSK test. It not only protects the health of teachers and students, but also breaks the space and geographical restrictions, allowing candidates to successfully complete the exam remotely using the internet.
The Online examination system was divided into candidates’ page and examination service system. In order to ensure the smooth progress of the examination, Guo Rui, a volunteer teacher of the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi, was responsible for the entire examination process and the content of the online invigilation for the instructors. Under the guidance of examination teachers and technical teachers from Chinese Testing International, the volunteer teacher familiarized and mastered the examination system, and at the same time had a certain understanding of the candidates' pages. In order to ensure the smooth progress of the exam, online training was conducted to candidates before taking the online exam. The candidates needed to install and download the candidates’ page, test equipment and network speed, and familiarize themselves with the online test rules, independently printing the test admission ticket and conducting simulated test training, etc. Since the full prior preparation was made before the exam, the candidates completed the exam smoothly.
Prof. Xiao Shan, the Director of Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi, said that the HSK Online Exam posed a new challenge to the CIUON. She said CIUON would work to build the network, increase the speed of the network, improve the hardware and software equipment, and create the conditions for the online exams for the candidates. Although the COVID-19 epidemic affected normal teaching, forcing the teachers to stay at home, the teachers created platforms to provide classes to students and opportunities for students with HSK test needs. Online teaching, online office, online examination all help in exploring and accumulating experience for better work in the future.
