On October 15, 2024, the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi (CIUON) participated in Daystar University cultural week. The event attracted hundreds of students, all eager to explore the rich traditions of China and learn more about Chinese at CIUON. There were performances and several interactive activities allowing the students to actively engage with Chinese traditions.
CIUON enthralled the audience with performances, including the mesmerizing Face Changing (Bian Lian), an act from Sichuan opera where performers rapidly switch masks to depict different emotions or characters; the energetic Lion Dance, a traditional Chinese performance symbolizing good luck and prosperity, often performed during festive occasions. The graceful Inner Mongolia Dance is a dance from different ethnic groups from Inner Mongolia depicting their characteristics. A vocal performance of the song "Little Happiness." and a bamboo flute solo of the piece "Big Fish" were also given by CIUON students.
Some of the activities were, Woodblock printing whereby carved wooden blocks are inked and used to press designs onto paper, paper cutting, face painting, calligraphy and Chinese knot making which is a form of decorative art where participants learned to tie various knots, symbolizing good fortune. Participating in these activities provided students with a unique opportunity to connect with Chinese culture and foster a greater understanding of its rich artistic heritage.
Highlights included the ring tossing game, where participants enjoyed friendly competition, and the chance to wear Hanfu, a traditional clothing originating from Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE) and is known for its flowing robes, wide sleeves, and intricate designs. Wearing Hanfu allowed participants to appreciate the elegance and grace of traditional Chinese fashion, while posing for photos to capture the moment.
To complete the cultural experience, students also had the chance to savor authentic Chinese cuisine, including braised noodles, dumplings, and cold noodles, which received widespread praise.
This event has been a wonderful platform for fostering cultural exchange and understanding between Kenya and China. Through interactive activities, performances, and language learning opportunities, the Confucius Institute has inspired many students to explore the beauty and complexity of Chinese culture.
